Whitney Houston's estate have hit out at rapper Pusha T for his new album cover, which depicts a photo taken of the late singer's drug-strewn bathroom counter from 2006.
Releasing a statement to ET, they said that they were 'extremely disappointed', adding: "Even in Whitney's death, we see that no one is exempt from the harsh realities of the world."
Pusha T said in a radio interview that the photo was not meant to be used as the cover for 'Daytona', and that it was actually Kanye West's idea to run with it after changing his mind at the last minute. West founded G.O.O.D. Music, which Pusha-T is signed to.
He said: "The artwork, it was pictures that we all agreed on. [West] picked the photographer, I took these pictures, I was like, 'Yo, these are fresh.' I picked all of these pictures out, he had a little edit to it, how he wanted the actual grading of the picture to look. Picked the picture, great, we look, boom, boom, boom, it's good."
He continued: "1 a.m., my phone rings, no caller ID. [West says,] 'Hey, I think we should change the artwork, and I like this other artwork.' I said, 'hey, I don't want to pay for that, and I wasn't even gonna ask you to pay for that.'" He said that West replied: "this is what people need to see to go along with that music. I'mma pay for that.", and covered the $85,000 licencing fee for the picture.
