Following the recent petition for a statue of Missy Elliott to be erected in place of a confederacy statue in her home state of Virginia, a similar bid has been launched in Minnesota to honour one of its most famous musical sons.
With calls for the removal of confederacy and slave owner-related statues to be removed around the United States in recent weeks, thousands have already signed the petition to replace a statue of Christopher Columbus with one of Prince in Minnesota.
"Here in Minnesota, communities are reigniting the demand to bring down state’s monument to Christopher Columbus, a man who murdered, raped and enslaved Black and Native peoples in the Americas," the pitch reads. "We, the undersigned, do not believe that Columbus represents the values Minnesotans carry. Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish Black and Native peoples, we should honor members of our community whose leadership we find inspirational."

Prince was recently in the news again after his sister revealed that the late star's favourite colour was not purple, despite decades of being associated with it and Pantone even naming a new shade of purple after the late star.
