The weekend is almost upon us, and maybe you're in search of something to soundtrack it – or perhaps you're just on the hunt for some new music.
Every Friday, we'll choose three great new release songs you should hear, from both Irish and international acts, point you in the direction of the bands or artists who created them, and send you on your merry way to investigate further.
TEBI REX – 'I Got My Whole'
This Kildare duo, aka Max Zanga and Matt O'Baoill, are capitalising on two of their songs recently featuring on the 'Normal People' soundtrack in glorious fashion. This is an irresistible, slouchy, summery hip-hop tune that's taken from their forthcoming mixtape. Bonus points for the double entendre.
ZAPHO & TOLU MAKAY FEAT. JENNY BROWNE – 'Collide'
This song marks the beginning of a project called The X Collective, a community of independent music creatives banding together to collaborate, combine and support. This stunning neo-soul number featuring X Collective co-founder and singer-songwriter Zapho, Afro-Irish singer Tolu Makay and spoken word artist Jenny Browne, is just insanely good.
PILLOW QUEENS – 'Handsome Wife'
They've barely been around a year, so Pillow Queens really have no right to be releasing songs as accomplished as this. The Dublin band, who unabashedly borrow from '90s grunge and indie-rock, announced their debut album 'In Waiting' this week – that's due in September. Until then, songs like this brilliantly catchy number, which “looks at the importance of life’s often underappreciated moments”, will whet your appetite very nicely.
