Although he may not have been as instantly recognisable as Lemmy Kilmister, Phil 'The Animal' Taylor played an integral part in Motorhead's early successes.

The now-legendary drummer, famed for his high-octane beats and distinctive hairstyle, passed away yesterday from a long illness in his home in England. His former colleague in Motorhead, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, took to Facebook yesterday to announce the news of Taylor's death.

Clarke's post read: "I have known Phil since he was 21 and he was one hell of a character. Fortunately we made some fantastic music together and I have many many fond memories of our time together. Rest in Peace, Phil!"

Taylor's work could be heard on some of Motorhead's most seminal and well-known work, including the albums Overkill and Ace of Spades.
