It didn't take long for American Idol to be picked up by another network, as ABC are bringing back the reality TV show, which formerly aired on Fox, for another series.

However, to give viewers another reason to tune in to an arguably flagging format, they've also got an ace up their sleeve: Katy Perry is going to be a judge on the series.

"I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories," said Perry in a statement. "I'm always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough – from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music."

Bagging one of the world's biggest pop stars for such a role is undoubtedly a boon for the network, and people generally seemed happy about the news.
