The jury has begun deliberations in the trial of Adam Clayton's former personal assistant Carol Hawkins, who is accused of over 180 counts of theft from her then employer totalling almost €3 million.

Hawkins, who is 47 and hails from Lower Rathmines Road in Dublin, has pled not guilty to the charges. It is alleged that Hawkins funded a lavish lifestyle by embezzling money from the U2 bass player's accounts, including paying for family holidays and even an apartment in New York.

The trial has lasted three weeks and 20 witnesses have been questioned on the stand. The prosecution derided Hawkins for an "orgy of spending", while the defense claimed that she was Clayton's "right hand man".
