Jim White is a former taxi driver, fashion model and professional surfer who has now re-invented himself as a gothic singer from the Deep South. No Such Place is certainly not short on musical invention, blending country strumming with the sounds of the city and even throwing in a few hip-hop samples. This is as nothing, though, compared to White's lyrics which can only be described as truly bizarre. Murderers, ghosts, preachers and devils all feature in these eerie tales, gloomily sung by a seriously troubled narrator. Fans of alternative country will love this record, others should approach with extreme caution.
