He's been through numerous variations on his name and stage name over the course of his life: first Shawn Carter, then Jay-Z and latterly, Jay Z - and now it would appear that one of rap's biggest stars is making yet another change to his moniker.
FactMag spotted that the rapper had been spelling his name with an umlaut (two dots used in Germanic languages) on his Tidal streaming website - and he has also used the same stylisation on Facebook in recent days, making him Jaÿ-Z. He's also re-introduced the hyphen that he dropped in 2013.
What's it all about? Well, since he's about to go out on tour to play the b-sides from throughout his career, The Fader reckons that it might be a reference to his early days, as apparently he used to use the umlaut styling before circa. 1996 when he released his debut album 'Reasonable Doubt', as seen on its cover below.
