The Mercury Prize shortlist was announced yesterday and there was the usual mix of well-known names and a few surprises in the fray.

Unfortunately – and perhaps somewhat surprisingly – there were no Irish acts on the shortlist, with many expecting albums by Lankum and Girl Band to get a nod this year.

Instead, the likes of Dua Lipa and Stormzy will battle it out with Lanterns on the Lake and Porridge Radio, as well as pop star Charli XCX - whose lockdown-recorded album 'how I'm feeling now' is also nominated.

The winner is usually announced at a live event in London, but it's not yet clear if that will happen this year. Either way, the Prize will be awarded on September 10th.
