He hasn't performed live in almost six years, so Frank Ocean's headline slot at Coachella on Sunday night was teed up to be a big comeback.
However, things didn't quite work out that way, as the audience at the Californian festival discovered to their dismay.
Ocean's set was described as disjointed, lethargic and downright bizarre, with the crowd's view of him and his band blocked by a stream of people walking in a circle around them. He also took the stage an hour late.
He remained seated for most of his set, until a DJ set randomly kicked off in the middle of it - leading many to believe that Ocean had finished performing. Most of the songs he performed, meanwhile, were reworked versions of the original.
Several explanations have been offered for the disastrous set - including one that would explain the people walking in a circle on stage. Some reports suggest that the stage set-up initially entailed an elaborate ice rink, and the people walking were supposed to be skating around Ocean and his band. However, the singer reportedly changed his mind at the 11th hour, meaning that the rink had to be melted and dismantled on the day of the performance - which would also explain the delay.
Another report claimed that he had injured his ankle earlier in the week while cycling around the Coachella site, which led him to change up/simplify the stage set-up at the last minute, per doctor's orders.
All in all, it sounds pretty much like a damp squib, with Variety calling it 'Aimless' and 'WTF', and Pitchfork describing it as "a lowkey, 80-minute set that hardly rose to the occasion and ended abruptly."
As you may know, however, Coachella takes place across two consecutive weekends - so Ocean will once again headline next Sunday.
Will it be the same set, or will be make amends? Time will tell...
