The music industry certainly works in mysterious ways - this five-piece from Bury went through record label hell before being allowed to release their debut album but now they're being confidently hailed as the new Coldplay. It's a fair enough comparison; Elbow have the same blend of slow, brooding melodies and plaintive vocals that appeals so strongly to lonely teenagers in bedrooms. But there's more to the band than that; they have a fertile lyrical imagination and sense of musical ambition that marks them out from their competitors in the indie-angst stakes. This album isn't a masterpiece (few debuts are) but it's certainly a very promising beginning.
