Sad news broke the other day when it was revealed that Ed Sheeran's grandmother Anne aka Nancy had passed away.
The 98-year-old Irish lady had inspired Sheeran's 2017 song 'Nancy Mulligan', recorded with Beoga and released on the deluxe edition of his album 'Divide'. Born in Gorey, she lived for many years in the north Wexford village of Craanford and died peacefully in a nursing home in Enniscorthy.
Nancy had moved to London at the age of 20, met her Northern Irish husband Bill there and raised their eight children before moving back to Wexford forty years ago.
However, because of the ongoing copyright infringement trial that Sheeran is involved in in New York, he could not make the funeral - which was held in Wexford yesterday.
Sheeran's dad John gave the eulogy, saying "I am very sad that our son Edward is unable to be here today. He’s so upset that he cannot be present – he has to be thousands of miles away in a court in America defending his integrity.
"I know he is comforted by the fact that he was able to spend some precious time alone with his grandma just a month ago."
The singer has not yet commented or paid tribute to his beloved grandmother publicly, although he has been vlogging via Instagram and celebrated the New York premiere of his new Disney+ documentary 'The Sum of It All' yesterday.
His new album 'Subtract' is released tomorrow.
