For a short time last night it appeared as though The Flaming Lips had called it a day. A tweet appeared on the band's official Twitter account, which they've since deleted, which proclaimed, "We have sad news. We've broken up..."
Shortly afterwards another tweet appeared, saying: "lol just joking guys" (which has also been deleted), before the band's record label intervened by saying "not true" when asked by Rolling Stone if the retirement rumours were true.
In the midst of this entire hullabaloo, the band's frontman Wayne Coyne tweeted from his own account that the Lips' account had been hacked, which is probably the simplest explanation for this episode - especially when you consider that subsequent tweets (also all since deleted) contained requests for the band's fans to buy the latest single from Union J, a request for Justin Bieber to follow them and an image of a skeleton proclaiming 'Flaming Lips 1983 - 2013'.
But this afternoon, as far as we're concerned, the Flaming Lips are still together in all their wonderful and insane glory.
