Even though my tastes evolved over my formative years with music containing guitars, drums, angst ridden vocals and little else, I've long had a soft spot for a bit of dubstep. Perhaps this comes down to a former housemate of mine with a taste for this beepy/clicky brand of music, or maybe it's the idea that it's music which sounds kinda like you're inside a computer when you get the 'blue screen of death'.
Whichever side of the dubstep debate you find yourself on there's little denying that a nerdy-looking 25-year-old kid Californian Sonny John Moore is sitting at the summit of this breakout genre. Skrillex, as he has come to be known, doesn't particularly look like a global superstar - more like a Corey Feldman lookalike if we're honest - but he's bagged more awards that would fit on all of our collective mantelpieces, including a total of six Grammys.
Still, as popular and successful as he is, sometimes Skrillex doesn't come across as particularly, well, cool. And hey, we think that's part of the attraction of him, as it's a perfectly human thing to make a tit out of yourself every once in a while. It's just that Skrillex seems to have got this down to a fine art. Delve into our video collection below for evidence.
DERPSTEP #1 - SKRILLEX RUNS HEAD FIRST INTO STAGE PROP, HURTS SELF
He may need to get the prescription in his trademark thick-rimmed glasses checked because there's really no other obvious explanation for Skrillex running directly into one of his stage props and knocking himself over on to one of his lighting rigs. Ouch, this one really looks like it hurt.
DERPSTEP #2 - SKRILLEX DANCING LOOKS LIKE HE'S BEING ATTACKED BY GIANT BEES
Beads? No, bees! He's not exactly displaying Justin Timberlake levels of dance skill here, is he? But hey, it isn't a competition. Fun fact: this video is one whole hour long, so get comfortable. Or, y'know, move on to #3.
DERPSTEP #3 - SKRILLEX SETS OWN HAIR ON FIRE DOING RELATIVELY SIMPLE TASK
At his 25th birthday last January, Skrillex was blowing out the candles on his birthday cake - a task he's presumably done on several occasions in the past - and managed to set his locks alight by doing so. Granted, he noticed before it ended up too bad but come one Sonny, this is very basic stuff.
DERPSTEP # 4 - A SKRILLEX SOLO IS ACTUALLY A LITTLE UNDERWHELMING
The below post-gig solo is little more than a bit of knob-twiddling (hey-oh!) but, to be perfectly clear here, the best thing about this video isn't Skrillex's underwhelming solo but moreso the sunglasses-wearing eejit on the right of the screen who's clearly gotten a little too carried away with a chemical substance or two.
DERPSTEP #5 - SKRILLEX AND THE DOORS WERE NEVER, EVER MEANT TO RECORD TOGETHER
I'm not quite sure whose idea it was to get John Densmore and (the now late) Ray Manzarek of The Doors into a collaboration with Skrillex but I'm relatively confident in saying that it didn't work. Densmore and Manzarek clearly weren't very aware of Skrillex's style of music, as at one point Densmore criticises music which comes from "machines", while Skrillex accidentally insults him back by saying that his father "would probably ask for your autograph." As if that wasn't bad enough, our favourite part is where Ray Manzarek shows up, completely out of his element, and starts talking to Skrillex like he's a child. Oh dear.
