David Mead sounds like a figure from a bygone age. The suave New Yorker is essentially a pop performer in the grand old style, who writes epic songs with the urgency of an early Elvis Costello and the showbiz swagger of Frank Sinatra. His second album is a significant advance on his debut The Luxury Of Time, ranging from exuberant XTC-style pop to tender balladry in the Scott Walker tradition. Adding pianos, brass and violins to the staple guitars/drums formula, he creates a rich textural sound which perfectly matches the brooding romanticism of his songs. It may be just a little too smooth for some, but Mine And Yours confirms Mead as the new face of melodic, adult rock.
