One of Cork's most well-known and beloved venues The Pavilion has announced today on its official Twitter account that it has closed its doors for the final time.

There had been no indication that a closure was imminent and the news has caused huge reverberations on social media from bands and music fans alike who will clearly feel its absence.

No reasons have been given for the closure as of yet and there was no answer when entertainment.ie attempted to contact them by phone this morning.

The venue, which won the Munster Live Venue of the Year award in 2010, still has a number of bands listed on the events section of its website including Girl Band and Icelandic band Samaris but presumably these shows have been shelved.

Le Galaxie commented on the closure on their own Twitter page, saying: "Ugh. Utterly miserable at hearing @ThePavilion has had to shut it's doors. The place blew our minds every time. A truly special venue :-("
