You may have already heard that Coldplay are in court facing allegations of plagiarism from guitarist Joe Satriani. Satriani claims that Chris Martin and his band used "substantial, original portions" from his song "If I Could Fly" for their hit single "Viva La Vida."
In court yesterday, Coldplay refuted these allegations and their attorneys argued that any similarities between the two tracks weren't enough to warrant damages. They also dealt a low blow by claiming that Satriani's song "lacks originality," and shouldn't receive copyright protection. Hardly the plea of the innocent. In response, Satriani's lawyer, Howard E. King, said Coldplay's statement was typical for copyright infringement cases and is still demanding a jury trial, damages plus all profits from the release.
