Bob Dylan's new album 'Tempest' is to be released on the 11th September and has been described as the 'best thing he's done in a decade'.
Speaking about the album, which will be his 35th studio album, Dylan said 'anything goes and you just gotta believe it will make sense.' The 10 track album has been produced by himself under the pseudonym Jack Frost. The release of the album also coincides with the celebration of Dylan's 50 years as a recording artist.
Dylan set out to make a more religious album as he felt he did not have enough of religion in previous works, but the album he ended up with is more about big endings and big stories. This album has also been described by the LA times as having a darkness to it, saying 'a darkness has replaced the instrumental interludes, buoyancy and lightness of his last three albums'. The title track 'Tin Angel' tells the tale of a man looking for a lost love and is a 14 minute depication of the Titanic which he drew from Carter Family's The Titanic and also includes Leonardo Di Caprio. Speaking about the track, Dylan said 'People are going to say, 'Well, it's not very truthful. But a songwriter doesn't care about what's truthful. What he cares about is what should've happened, what could've happened. That's its own kind of truth.' The album concludes with a warm tribute to John Lennon.
The reference to Shakespeare on the title Tempest created speculation as to whether this might be Dylan's last album. But he's dismissed this saying 'Shakespeare's last play was called The Tempest. It wasn't called just plain Tempest. The name of my record is just plain Tempest. It's two different titles'
Dylan previewed the album by allowing track Early Roman Kings to appear on the trailer of new HBO series Strike Back.
