South London DJs Basement Jaxx made a huge impact with their debut album Remedy and this fine follow-up should consolidate their reputation as darlings of the club scene. The reason is simple: this canny duo have a knack of dreaming up killer tunes and, by dressing them up in Europop trappings, turning them into instant dancefloor classics. Named after their monthly club night in Brixton, Rooty is a colourful melange of musical styles (hip-hop, house, garage, flamenco, RnB) with a boisterous sense of fun and a blissful disregard for the dictates of fashion. Purists might quibble about its blatant commercialism but most people will be too busy voting with their feet to care.
