While you were sleeping, the pop world was having a time

It all went down last night, with Nicki starting on Miley, Kanye announcing his run for president, a lot of skin being on show and plenty of surprises. But what are the MTV Video Music Awards if not a time for the celeb world to go as nuts as possible?

Nicki Minaj opened proceedings with 'Trini Dem Girls' and 'The Night Is Still Young' before Taylor Swift came out to share the stage and the internet went into meltdown as they did 'Bad Blood', seemingly burying theirs.

Macklemore was second to perform, doing his new tune 'Downtown' live from downtown L.A. because what the VMAs needs is more obvious choices.

Meanwhile The Weeknd's performance of 'Can't Feel My Face' was so good that it even had Kanye dancing in his seat (although he's clearly been infected by whatever it is that Taylor Swift has that causes her to dance terribly).

After that we had Demi Lovato's 'Cool For The Summer' which everyone was enjoying until Iggy Azalea made an appearance and ruined it for everyone.

A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots performed 'HeavyDirtySoul/M$/LSD', while Pharrell was downtown to perform 'Freedom'.

Second to last was Bieber's big return performance 'Where Are Ü Now/What Do You Mean', in which he got very emotional (if you believe his tears).

And then, of course, we had Miley to close out the show singing about loving weed and loving life, dropping a new single AND a new album on the world.

So yeah, all in all, a very quiet night.

And in case you're concerned with the winners of the actual awards (because that's the point of this show and not the controversy remember) they're emboldened below. Now if you'll excuse us we need a lie down after all that.
