2023 was a banner year for Irish pop artist Pastiche, who was featured as a Keychange artist and played the massive stages at the 3Olympia, Collins Barracks and Iceland Airwaves.
Amidst these achievements, though, the Dublin-born, London-based Pastiche battled bouts of excruciating pain, fatigue, mood swings, acne, hair loss and irregular periods. After being told by medical practitioners that it was all in her head, Pastiche was finally diagnosed with Stage 4 Endometriosis and received life-changing surgery last year that inspired her new single, ‘Forfeit Control’.
We caught up with Pastiche to learn more about her.
1. What’s the music that you listened to growing up, that you still listen to today?
Growing up I was a 'radio top 40' kid, for sure. I always had MTV on in the background, or the chart shows where they played all the music videos. I really came into my own musical taste in the pop explosion of the late 2000s early 2010s: Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande… the list goes on. I also think that my love of the likes of Madonna made me want to be a pop writer as well as a pop singer - you just can't beat a well written pop song.
2. In three words, describe the minute before you walk on stage.
Fizzy (love this word lately), chaos, palpitations.
3. How do you wind down after a gig?
I’ve been lucky - on many occasions, I am just immediately handed a pint, which is ideal. I love going back to the green room with my band, drinking some whiskey and talking about how the gig either went very well or very badly. We usually end up hysterically laughing, either way. Then we usually get inevitably kicked out of the venue, so we fit as much beer as we can in our bags and go back to one of our rooms. Also, a bath is so nice after a gig.
4. What’s the one song (by another artist) you wish you’d written or recorded first?
It’s kinda niche, but 'Move' by Little Mix. I’m not even a “Mixer” but the first time I heard that song, I always thought ‘Damn, I wish that was my song’. Still to this day it makes me go feral.
5. What is your pet peeve?
Sound men that aren’t actually sound at all.
6. Name one record, one book and one film that everyone should hear / read / see.
Record: ‘Melodrama’ by Lorde. One of the finest pop albums in existence (Katy Perry's ‘Teenage Dream’ a close second). I urge everyone to just go and listen to it top to bottom at least once in their lives.
Book: ‘The Thursday Murder Club’. If you like stories about OAPs living in a care home that love murder mysteries (probably will be me in 50 years) then it's the book for you. Even if that sounds like an awful plot, trust me, you will love it. We never really get to hear stories centred around older people - we seem to really infantilise older people, forgetting they have goals, loves, heartbreaks and so much more.
Film: I recently saw ‘Dune’ and I HATE to be that person on the hype train but it's like ‘Game of Thrones’ in space (and Florence Pugh is in the second one, so it’s a no-brainer).
7. Pick the director and lead actor(s) for a biopic about your life.
Quentin Tarantino (but strictly no feet stuff) and Mia Goth playing me, but it's shot like a feature film version of ‘Glee’. Chaos, essentially.
8. You’re ordering take-away, what do you get?
Sushi! Crunch roll, veggie gyoza, cabbage salad and a numbingly cold can of Coke Zero.
9. Describe your perfect day off.
I wake up after sleeping for nine hours. First thing I have is a jasmine green tea and eggs for breakfast. It’s summertime and I go to an antiques market and buy lots of crap I don't need, but it makes me happy. I get the best iced coffee ever. About 4pm (not too hot, not too cold) I go swimming in a pool and then lie out reading a book. Dinner time is picky bits on a blanket in the garden wearing an extremely soft hoodie that realistically kind of irritates my sunburn. I'm in bed as the sun is still going down at like 10pm, eating chocolate and watching a documentary about murder on YouTube with a peppermint tea.
10. Tell us, in one sentence, why we should come to your next gig (whenever it may be.)
I get to do my rookie stand-up set in-between songs - I take off my heels and attack my drummer’s cymbals with them. I dance, I sing, I wear fun outfits, I’m partial to rolling around on the floor when it feels right, and I will grab a drink with you afterwards.
