If you loved 'The Queen's Gambit' so much that it turned you into a chess fan, there's good news.
The Netflix series - which itself is based on 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis - has proven hugely successful amongst viewers, who were engrossed by the tale of orphan and childhood chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), and how she dealt with drug and alcohol addictions while simultaneously becoming an international star of the chess world.
Now, the theatrical rights to the story have been acquired by production company Level Forward, who previously staged a hugely successful revival of 'Oklahoma!'.
"It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater,” they said in a statement. "Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward."
If the project goes ahead, it will most likely be several years before it actually hits the stage. And as for who might write the book and the music ? Certainly not whoever was responsible for this SNL sketch, in any case.
