A Maori girl abandoned by her father after her mother's death is raised by her grandfather Koro, the tribal chief. The departure of his own son leaves Koro without a male heir, so he begins to train the local boys to determine who will be worthy of the honour - but his grand-daughter is determined to prove she can take up the reins of power.
