Welles' adaptation of Franz Kafka's existentialist novel reaches stylistic heights remarkable even for the director of Citizen Kane. Anthony Perkins' "Josef K." encounters overwhelming spaces, filled with endless desks or immense crowds, as he attempts to clear his name in the face of a hellishly intractable bureaucracy. Welles dubbed eleven of the characters himself, and stars Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider bring their own talents to the director's uniquely personal work following his disillusionment with the Hollywood system. Along with Kane, it was one of the only two films Welles made with no outside interference.
