Raman Hui's directs a colourful computer-animated odyssey, adapted by screenwriters David Magee and Christopher Yost from Laurence Yep's celebrated novel. Living in San Francisco with his grandmother, Chinese American boy Tom Lee (voiced by Brandon Soo Hoo) studies magic and mythology under his ageing relative so he can assume the role of guardian and defend against the forces of evil. Alas, monsters lurk in the shadows and Tom is take under the paws of his grandmother's former apprentice, a tiger called Mr Hu (Henry Golding), who reveals that a coral rose in the boy's possession is an ancient phoenix. Enemy leader Vatten (Deborah S Craig) covets the magical bird and Mr Hu and Tom join forces with a band of merry misfits to repel further attacks else the world will fall into perpetual darkness
