Arlene is a young factory-worker who lives alone in a small midlands town. She wakes one morning on the edge of a wood, lying beside the dead body of nother young woman, Gina Molloy, whom she did not know. Taking refuge in denial, Arlene returns to her normal life. Days later the body is discovered by schoolgirls and talk of murder spreads through the community. Arlene, a sleepwalker since childhood, begins to deprive herself of sleep – fearing both what might happen to her and what she might be capable of. Drawn to Gina Molloy’s bereaved family and her teenage lover, for Arlene the line starts to blur between sleeping and waking states, between tangible and imagined realities. Finally, as she trespasses further into the family’s grief, Arlene is given in opportunity to accept her own tragic past.
