A book dealer is hired by a wealthy collector to locate the two remaining copies of 17th-century work The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows. His search takes him to New York, Madrid and Paris as he becomes increasingly curious about rumours that the book's author collaborated with the Devil.
