The Comedians
2002 Drama | DocumentaryA documentary portrait, which follows the legendary Burstein Family, a popular Yiddish vaudeville troupe, on an odyssey from Europe, through Israel and South America all the way to New York's Second Avenue. The late Pesach'ke Burstein was one of the most acclaimed Yiddish theater actors of his day. Born into an Orthodox family in Poland and later shunned by his father for his acting ambitions, Pesach'ke immigrated to New York in 1924 and found success as a traveling actor and singer. He was later joined on the musical stage by wife Lilian Lux and children Mike and Susan. Following Pesach'ke's triumphant return to Europe, the Bursteins later immigrated to Israel. The chronicle shows rare film clips, musicals and family home movies with the Burstein's that are interspersed with on-and-off stage gossip about the last remaining icons of Yiddish theater's Golden Age. The film offers both anecdotes and observations on what it was like to live as a family of performing artists, constantly on the road.
