When the government is developing plans to have a motorway run through his estate, mayor Benjamin Rolus tries to stop them by suggesting a route through the center of the village. This plan would mean the eviction of a number of elderly residents. This is the final straw for his political opponent, Jan Boel, who only has bad recollections about the Rolus family. Twenty years ago, Boel was a servant of the Rolus family but he got thrown out of their house when they discovered he had an affair with Pascale, Benjamin's cousin. To stop the government's plans, Benjamin barricades himself in his house and threatens to shoot any trespassers. The police lay siege and it takes two deaths to restore village life to normal.
