Blood Fruit
DocumentaryIn 1948, the South African government passed the apartheid regime. Nearly forty years later, Mary Manning, a 21-year-old checkout girl at Dunnes Stores on Henry Street, Dublin, refused to register the sale of a South African Outspan grapefruit. She and ten other workers were suspended, and a strike ensued that would go on for two-and-ahalf years. This drama-documentary tells the story of these Irish checkout girls and that of Nimrod Sejake, the man from a township in Johannesburg who joined their picket line and inspired them to change the face of the antiapartheid movement around the world.
