APART, TOGETHER

Yiru is a Chinese teenager who is forced to travel to Los Angeles with her mom in search of her long-lost sister who was abandoned under the one-child-policy and then adopted by an American family. As Yiru helps as a translator during the trip, she grapples with feelings of isolation and longing for her mom’s love as the search intensifies. Yiru finds her sister on social media, and when she finally stands in front of her — a much mature, privileged girl with a loving adoptive mother, she decides to take actions to protect herself and her own relationship to her mom.
