Summer 1916. A skeleton crew of British army soldiers man the forward trenches while the troops are assembled behind the lines for the big Somme offensive. 'The Trench' is strong on period detail but the characters themselves are no more than adequately sketched cliches. The final scene, in which the men finally go over the top, is stylishly shot but by then an unforgivable ennui has set in.
