Gold-digging socialite Lily (Anderson) finds herself accused of having an affair is consequently snubbed by society. Director Terence Davies (The Long Day Closes) remains faithful to the tone of Edith Wharton's novel, but that results in a film that is shackled by emotional repression. Anderson shines in a difficult role.
