Gather round, young children, and we will tell you a tale of aliens and cats and empowered women in science-fiction.

It was the year 1979 and a TV commercial director, on the foot of a cracking film about swordfighters in Napoleonic France (The Duellists, check it out seriously), decided to try his hand at science-fiction.

In doing so, he created one of the most recognisable characters in film and one of the most terrifying creatures in your subconscious.

We cannot begin to overstate how much we love Alien and the follow-up, Aliens. Alien3, we think, was a intriguing mess. But a mess, nonetheless.

Alien: Resurrection was some really well-made fan fiction. And that was basically it. We don't talk about Alien Versus Predator.

So, fast forward to a month or two ago and District 9 director put some images from an ill-fated Alien sequel he was working on on Instagram.

We all collectively sighed about what might have been, but now it's coming true. That's right, children. A sequel to Alien does exist.

In a somewhat ironic move, Blomkamp released the news via Instagram yet again, posting what we think is an original HR Giger piece from the 1979 film.

We don't know about you, but we're clearing our schedule out for the next couple of years.

Amazing. Just... amazing.
