Not wanting to feel left out in the dark in this new musical-loving movie era we now live in, the 1978 classic 'Grease' is getting a prequel.
Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as Danny and Sandy, 'Grease' is a Hollywood staple that has spanned musicals, TV shows, and anything else you can imagine.
And now it looks like we'll be getting a lot more Greasy goodness very soon. A prequel movie, which will document how our two leading love-birds ended up meeting, is in the works at Paramount Pictures. Named after the iconically dirty yet also innocent song, 'Summer Nights' will be transporting viewers back to the summer of love that the pair happened to meet.
No doubt, the storytelling of how these two classic musical characters will pique interest in many fans of the original. Even just from looking back at the lyrics of the song, there's actually quite a decent amount that you can take from it. Will Danny save Sandy from drowning? Will they get "friendly" on a beach? Will Travolta and Newton-John have cameos? Like, does he have a car?
John August, writer of Tim Burton's 'Big Fish' as well as forthcoming efforts such as Disney's live-action 'Aladdin', and 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' will penn the script.
No other information about the 'Grease' prequel has been announced yet, so it looks like we're in for quite a long wait until the film sees the light of day. Following the script, there will need to be the confirmation of a director, as well as who the two leading actors will be. No pressure guys, but you'll have some pretty big boots to fill, which fans will pick apart.
When you put everything into perspective, capturing the magic of the original movie, which is over 40 years old, and making it fresh enough for a new century, and a whole new audience, sounds like quite the tough task. Let's just hope it doesn't go the same ill-fated way as 'Grease 2'.
Here's 'Summer Nights' for you in the meantime, to remember just how great the original song was.
