It's now been officially confirmed that Woody Harrelson is joining the cast of the next Star Wars spinoff film.
Harrelson will join Alden Ehrenreich as young Han Solo, Donald Glover as young Lando Calrissian and Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke in a spinoff story about the early years of the Millennium Falcon. Although the official release didn't clarify what Harrelson's role will be, many believe that he'll be playing Han Solo's mentor of sorts - possibly even his father.
The film, which will be directed by 21 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be the second spinoff film in the Star Wars franchise. In the official release, Lord and Miller said that they "couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody," and that his "ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique."
So, thoughts? Harrelson's a great actor who, as they correctly point out, is well capable of being funny when he wants to be. Just like at him in Zombieland or even his work in Cheers way back when and you'll know that he's a lot of comedic talent - not that the Han Solo movie will be a comedy or anything, but it's definitely going to have flourishes of it because, well, why not?
Han Solo's sarcasm was a central part of the character, so it stands to reason he got it from somewhere. The as-yet untitled Han Solo movie is headed for cinemas in 2018.
