They don’t call her Wonder Woman for nothing.
The superhero blockbuster directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot in the leading role is now assured of earning $390 million-plus in the North American box office.
This makes the film not only the top gross of summer 2017 (beating out Marvel’s GOTG Vol. 2) but also one of the top 10 performances of all time for a comic book adaptation.
The film is now in its seventh week running in the US and grossed $371.3 million through Tuesday. The fact that it is assured of topping out at $390 million domestically means it will earn roughly 3.8 times the $103.3 million it collected when it launched over the June 2-4 weekend — the best multiple for the genre, for which a multiple in the vicinity of 2.5 to 3 is generally considered good, in years.
The movie is currently showing in 3000 locations and will likely play through August, and while its success in the global box office has not been as great as the domestic, it has become the worldwide top-grossing film of all time by a solo female director.
The film has already beaten the receipts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and is now destined to be DC/Warner Brothers’ third highest grossing movie domestically ever, behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (not adjusting for inflation).
