Despite resoundingly positive reviews and a strong box-office opening weekend, it seems as though some people just can't let Wonder Woman enjoy its moment.
As you may have heard, a boutique cinema in the US - Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas - has been hosting women-only screenings of Wonder Woman, with the entire staff of the cinema - projectionists and ushers and so on - also being women as well. This, of course, has pissed off MRAs and the like and it's even gotten to the stage where a legal action is being brought against the cinema for even hosting the thing in the first place.
Professor Stephen Clark of the Albany Law School claims that Alamo Drafthouse's women-only screenings constitute discrimination against men. In an interview with WaPo, Clark said it's about "the principle of the thing."
"I'm a gay man, and I’ve studied and taught gay rights for years. Our gay bars have long said that you do not exclude people because they’re gay or straight or transgender - you just can’t do that for any reason. We have to deal with the bachelorette parties that come to the gay bar... They’re terribly disruptive, but if you forbid women from coming to a gay bar, you’re starting down a slippery slope. It’s discrimination."
Clark has filed an administrative charge with Austin's Equal Employment and Fair Housing Office, which has seen multiple complaints lodged since the screenings were announced.
As it stands, the screenings are going ahead and all of them sold out within two hours - so it's clear people want them to happen.
