Released 50 years ago today, 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' is a bonafide children's classic and the Guardian can shut the hell up.
Starring Gene Wilder as the mysterious and maniacal chocolate factory owner, the movie was loosely based on Roald Dahl's novel of the same name and saw a group of five children touring said factory with dire consequences.
Well, sort of.
Although it wasn't a box-office success on it release in 1971, 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' eventually won over audiences by repeat screenings on television. Indeed, here in Ireland, 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' was guaranteed to be on the Christmas TV schedule each and every year during the '90s.
