The biggest film festival in the world (sorry JDIFF!) announced its line-up this morning, and we couldn't be more excited. This year's Cannes Film Festival is taking place in the cinematic coastal town between the 15th and 26th of May, and Steven Spielberg will be there as head of Jury, with Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) joining him on the judging panel.

Highlights of the festival include opening film The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann's epically glossy re-telling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, featuring the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. Other big name English-language screenings include Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest Ryan Gosling starrer Only God Forgives; Steven Soderbergh's "last movie" features Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as gay lovers in Behind The Candelabra; Alexander Payne follows up The Descendants with another family drama in Nebraska; Jeremy Renner, Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cottilard co-headline the magician and burlesque dancer filled Lowlife; the Coen Brothers latest has Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake Inside Llewyn Davis; Sofia Coppola's real-life based tale of klepto-teenagers The Bling Ring; an outstanding cast - Mila Kunis, Clive Owen, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup, Zoe Saldana, and James Caan face off in 70’s set crime thriller Blood Ties, and James Franco gets in the director’s chair for drama As I Lay Dying.

Foreign language fans are also well catered for, with big hitters like Roman Polanski (La Venus a la Fourrure), Francois Ozon (Jeune et Jolie) and Takashi Miike (Wara No Tate) showing off their latest films amid the hugely impressive output at this year’s festival.

But festivals like these are also where next year’s potential Oscar-winners can be discovered. It's here that they'll find all those tiny movies that nobody has heard of, until they win all the awards at Cannes. So keep ‘em peeled over the next few weeks as entertainment.ie keeps you updated on what’s hot and what’s not at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
