With the Fox / Disney merger set to be completed in the coming months and the vast array of characters to come under the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many of the characters we've come to know and love will be recast with new actors.
The focal point of the X-Men on screen, however, has always been Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. From the first movie back in 2000 right up to 2017's 'Logan', Jackman made the role of Wolverine his own - and it's hard to imagine anyone replacing him.
But, imagine we shall. Here's a few choices to take over.
OSCAR ISAAC
Technically, Oscar Isaac has already had a role in the X-Men universe - having played Apocalypse in the disappointing 'X-Men: Apocalypse'. Now, to be fair, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given plenty of actors a second run. Just look at Chris Evans, who originally played Johnny Storm in the equally disappointing 'Fantastic Four' and 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer'. Oscar Isaac has both the intensity and the range to play Wolverine, and he'd be our first choice to take the role on.
SCOTT EASTWOOD
Considering how 'Logan' was basically a superhero take-off of Clint Eastwood's 'Unforgiven', there's a certain symmetry in seeing the younger Eastwood taking over the role. He's age-appropriate, for one, and he's just at the cusp of stardom and would mean that taking on a role like this would put him well into the mainstream. Not only that, he does look like the old comic version of Logan, so give him a strategic shave and he's good to go.
MICHIEL HUISMAN
You probably know him best from 'Game of Thrones' as Daario Naharis or in Netflix's 'The Haunting Of Hill House', but Michiel Huisman has built up a solid career in indie roles and giving dramatic, committed performances. He's the closest to Hugh Jackman's look and complexion, and while he may not have the same intensity we've seen in the role, there's clearly going to be some differences from how Hugh Jackman played it to how Huisman could potentially play it. Let's not forget, as well, that there's going to be major differences in how they approach the character, and Huisman has the ability to blend and shape his performance to suit.
JOSH HUTCHERSON
If Marvel does end up going for much younger actors, the top of the list has got to include Josh Hutcherson. For one, he's shown that he can take on intense, action-orientated roles as evidenced by 'The Hunger Games'. Second, he actually looks like Wolverine as a young man and even has the build and physique needed for the role. Third, he's at just the right level, career-wise, that he can disappear into the role than it being this all-encompassing actor taking it over.
CHARLIE McDERMOTT
Again, a lot of our casting choices are shots in the dark and primarily based on the idea that Wolverine is either going to be in his late 30s or, failing that, a much younger iteration of the character we've seen in a long time. If Josh Hutcherson isn't available, the next best choice to take the role on would be Charlie McDermott. Although he doesn't look all that physically imposing currently, it just takes one of those Marvel gym trainers to get him into shape and looking like he's able to carry around giant knives in his knuckles.
