The Dark Knight finally opens in The States this weekend, with critical reaction officially bordering on euphoric. The New York Times started it off with "Pitched at the divide between art and industry, poetry and entertainment, The Dark Knight goes darker and deeper than any Hollywood movie of its comic-book kind"; while The Boston Globe churned in with "You come away impressed, oppressed, provoked, and beaten down, holding on to Ledger's squirrelly incandescence as a beacon in the darkness". In other words, it’s very very good. Also released across the pond, a week later than here, is Mamma Mia! which has split the critics right down the middle. Pierce Brosnan was a minus point for most critics even when they liked the film; with The Arizona Republic saying "Mamma Mia! is not going to make you think, nor does it want to. But it will make you sing, as long as Brosnan keeps his mouth shut". Newsday just plain hated it throwing in their two cents with "this sugary mix turns into a sour hairball that will have you gagging to expel it for 108 minutes". A bit harsh, but funny nonetheless.
