As time goes on and we get more and more tidbits from the upcoming 'Barbie' movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it continues to seem more and more bizarre. In a good way.
From psychedelic rollerskating dates to a bleach blonde Ryan Gosling, the news surrounding this movie just keeps coming, each headline or photo madder than the last.
What little has been revealed about the plot has sparked rumours that the movie will have several Barbies and Kens in a cast that boasts stars like America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, and Michael Cera.
The latest in the string of media attention around the "life in plastic" flick is that before filming was even underway, the cast had a big old sleepover to get acquainted. As you do.
Emma Mackey revealed to Empire that at the sleepover, the stars played games together including table tennis, "Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans and Ncuti Gatwa]".
She continued, "I don’t play games usually, because I get so competitive and angry. But Scott and I were top of the game". We've never heard of that kind of team building before, but who knows, maybe it'll catch on?
As for the film itself, Mackey promises that it's going to be as amusing as it looks from the pictures, "'Barbie' is light and funny and silly and American and pink". She puts the whimsy down to director Greta Gerwig whom she describes as "childishly delighted by what she’s doing".
As for the movie, we're very excited. As for the news surrounding the movie, we're just waiting for the next golden nugget — or rather, hot pink nugget — like, oh, we don't know, a coordinated all Barbie, all Ken flashmob on scooters or something.
'Barbie' is set to hit cinemas on July 21st, 2023.
