What is it with films about ancient gods and Egypt that makes us think of the music video for Michael Jackson's Remember The Time?
That music video basically ruined ancient Egypt for us. So it goes with Gods of Egypt, the new film from Alex 'I Can Make A Good Film If I Put My Mind To It' Proyas. Taking a leaf out of Clash of the Titans, the Egyptian gods and goddesses are battling one another for control over the world because reasons.
Makes sense, so far.
However, Gods of Egypt goes off the deep-end is in its casting. Gerard Butler plays Set, the god of desert whilst Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Horus, god of war and pretty birds. Chadwick Boseman, meanwhile, plays Thoth, god of wisdom and... yeah, you get the point.
With the exception of Chadwick Boseman, they're all white people. And sure enough, there's been a huge backlash online with many accusing the film of whitewashing.
Here's the trailer.
There's a decent idea, we suppose, but was Clash of the Titans that good a film to begin with? Does it need to spawn a clone like this?
Definitely not. But here we are, with a Norwegian and Scottish man playing an Egyptian deities. As you do. Also, didn't they basically just reveal the entire plot in that trailer?
Honestly, Gods of Egypt, you've got everything going for it to make this the Best / Worst Film of 2016.
