With a four disc collector's edition of Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to be released in November, it appears that a director's commentary from JJ Abrams is going to be the most interesting feature.
There's sure to be many interesting tidbits on said commentary but one that stands out is the suggestion Abrams received from his friend, Selma director Ava DuVernay.
Abrams describes how they'd shot the climactic lightsaber duel between Kylo Ren and Rey but when he showed it to DuVernay she had a suggestion for a shot of Rey that made it into the final film.
"I showed an early cut to my friend Ava DuVernay, and she had a bunch of great suggestions. One of them was she really wanted to see Daisy [Ridley], in her attack on Ren, have one really cool moment,” Abrams said. He continued, “We always had this moment, from when we shot it originally, and this used to be where she called him a monster and then pushed back. But instead, we reshot this and had her take this moment of hearing the Force and thinking about what Maz had told her, about closing her eyes and letting it in. And so she has this incredibly internal moment that is sort of extended in movie time, where she basically feels it, accepts it, and is now ready to kick his ass.”
Said moment is easily the most empowering moment for Rey in the whole film as she embraces her Jedi powers and prepares to unleash it on an unsuspecting Kylo Ren.
