Films based on games are now set to become the next hot property franchise for Hollywood.
If films like Warcraft and Assassin's Creed pan out and take off with audiences, expect to see a raft of videogame adaptations turned into films in the coming years. There's a long list of badly-adapted videogame films, including Super Mario Bros., any of the Resident Evil films and, of course, Street Fighter with Jean-Claude Van Damme as the all-American hero, Guile.
Angry Birds may not have the same lengthy heritage as any of these games, but it's arguably just as popular. The first trailer, however, doesn't exactly inspire a huge amount of confidence.
Jason Sudeikis stars as Red, a maladjusted bird whose heavy eyebrows and short temper have caused him nothing trouble but for many years. We hear ya, man. When a group of pigs arrive on his tropical island and begin to... infest?... the island, it becomes clear that he alone can't do it and must band together with a few other misfits, voiced by Frozen's Josh Gad and Eastbound & Down's Danny McBride.
Here's the first, full-length trailer.
So, thoughts? Well, it's like this. They're obviously aware that just as many adults played Angry Birds as children did, so it's clearly a case of trying to strike a balance between the two mindsets. Of course, no adult is that much of a fan of Angry Birds that they're going to turn up to this.
No, instead, they're going to bringing children with them because that's what happens. But, at the same time, would you let a child see a film where an eagle whips out his junk and pees into a lake which people have just drank from? It's a bit much, right? Then again, this could be a 12A rated film, in which case, great, go for it, make all the urine jokes you want.
We won't know any more until its May release date.
