If there's one thing Kathryn Bigelow knows how to do, it's getting down into the grit and making an audience feel like they're there.
The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, even Point Break had moments where you felt yourself being pulled along by the film. The 1967 Detroit Riots were some of the most destructive and violent civil disturbances in US history, resulting in 43 deaths and 7,200 arrests - with the National Guard and the US Army deployed to the streets of Detroit.
Detroit follows the beginnings of the riot and how it all started, following John Boyega and Will Poulter as two cops working before, during and in the aftermath of the riots. The film really does capture just how much of a warzone the riots were and the racial tension that lived in the city.
Detroit hits US cinemas on August 4th, with an Irish release date to be confirmed.
