Although you can't call two films a trend, tennis as a topic for high-stakes drama definitely seems to be a concept that filmmakers are warming up to.
This week saw the release of Battle Of The Sexes, starring Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carrell as Bobby Riggs, and today sees the release of Borg, a biopic surrounding the intense rivalry between Swedish wunderkind Bjorn Borg and his unhinged American nemesis, John McEnroe.
Filling out the role of Borg and McEnroe is Swedish actor Sverir Gudnason and everyone's favourite actor-turned-performance artist-turned-social activist-turned-Internet meme Shia LaBeouf. Stellan Skarsgard, meanwhile, plays Lennart Bergelin, Borg's coach who guided him to a total of 11 Grand Slam titles between 1974 and 1981.
Going by this trailer anyway, it does appear to be focusing more on Borg's problems as opposed to McEnroe, but that might simply be a regional thing and, quite likely, the English trailer for the film will bring LaBeouf's performance as McEnroe to the fore.
The film - which is titled Borg in Sweden and Borg/McEnroe everywhere else - is headed for a September 2017 release date here in Ireland.
Take a look.
