We've been quietly hopeful for The Martian, Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi / space opera since the bitterly disappointing Prometheus.

Based on the bestselling novel, The Martian follows botanist / astronaut Mark Whatney who's stranded on Mars following a catastrophic accident that sees him separated from his crew. Although NASA and his crew think he's dead, Whatney manages to make contact with Earth and so begins the dilemma of whether or not to send help for him, considering it's a four-year trip and the odds against his survival are (groan) astronomical.

The Martian debuted to very favourable reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival last night and, by all accounts, it looks like Ridley Scott has finally struck upon a winner after so many false starts in recent years.

We'll have a full review for The Martian pretty soon, but in the meantime, here's the very last trailer.
