Colin Farrell is no stranger to period dramas, having starred in Saving Mr. Banks with Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, and Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain and Samantha Morton.
However, Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled seems to be veering more into psychological thriller territory, if the first trailer is anything to go by. Farrell plays a wounded Union soldier during the American Civil War who is rescued by the staff of a girls' school, led by Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst, located deep in Confederate territory. As he recuperates, he slowly begins to charm his way into the hearts of the various women and turn them against each other.
Before long, it all starts to go horribly wrong and quite possibly gets violent. Based on the novel by Thomas Cullinan, this isn't the first time it's been adapted for the screen. Clint Eastwood starred in an adaptation back in 1971 alongside Geraldine Page and Elizabeth Hartman, although the film wasn't successful as it was marketed as a Western action film and not a slow-burn thriller.
It also marks Sofia Coppola's second time working with Dunst, having previously worked with her on the critically-reviled Marie Antoinette and the more popular Virgin Suicides.
The Beguiled is expected to hit Irish cinemas on June 23rd.
